Complete results from Sunday's 2nd Round of the Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross Series, presented by Accelerade, are available on the Pilarcitos Cyclesports website

www.pilarcitos.com

They were actually accessible last night but we were still moving trailers and equipment and ran out of promoting gas.

Our thanks to Chief Ref. Casey Kerrigan, Judges Barry Parks, Ryan Fu and Jenny Lun for scoring over 350 riders yesterday. If you want to see the magnitude of a judge's job in 'cross, pick a quiet time and peek over their shoulders - they score EVERY rider on EVERY lap. They get issued hand/wrist ibuprofen. And Tom Simonson, co-promoter of the 1975 National Cyclocross Championships in Tilden Park (1st 'cross championships in the US) recognizes enough of you to make corrections on the fly to our data base. If we're still missing team names or even Tom can't penetrate a mispelling from our data entry folks trying to decipher handwriting - please drop us a note so we can correct it.

Roaring Mouse Team Competie will be issued this week, as well as Series points standings. And I understand from Steve Woo and Scott Peradotto that Accelerade will position 5,000,000 gallons of water at McLaren Park to make sure there's enough Accelerade to float a battleship. I think I saw about 15-5 gallon water jugs when they first arrived yesterday and you closed them out. This was a warm weekend and I know the Roaring Mouse and Pilarcitos crew went through a lot of liquids yesterday. Maybe fall weather will pay us a visit one of these days.

We had several repeat winners from Hellyer Park with Buckwheat doubling in Master 45’s, Steve Reaney getting #2 in Master 35’s, Jeremy Blalock in Juniors, Jennifer Jordan in Women’s C and John Elgart in Master 55’s – even lack of a velodrome couldn’t keep these folks off the podium again.

Elite races had new winners this weekend with Shelley Olds taking her first BASPS victory and Justin Robinson, hot off the UCI points quest back east the last couple of weeks, unraveling a pack of 5 leaders midway through the contest to take the win. The Emen’s Series pot now stands at $910 after 2 races (see the link on the website to understand EMen and EWomen’s series prize package) with Mark Noble leading the results. Our next 2 races fall on the same weekends as the western swing of the US Grand Prix of Cyclocross.

What’s ahead for McLaren Park? Big Cheese from Roaring Mouse Paule Bates will be consulting on the park circuit – we’ll use a good stretch of Crocker-Amazon playfields as well as some of the less daunting portions of McLaren that Dylan uses for DFL’s challenge. Now, THAT’S 1 tough race.

Hellyer Park, San Jose, Ca
Sunday, October 8th, 2006

“Suppose we gave a race and everybody came?” Opening day of the Bay Area Super Prestige Season has traditionally seen fields of less than 300 start off their ‘cross season with the Pilarcitos gang (240 in 2003 at Brisbane, 245 in 2004 at Candlestick & 290 last year again at Candlestick) but Sunday the Park Rangers had to shut the gate entrance after 10:00 am – every parking place in Hellyer Park was taken. And during our post-race debriefing with the Hellyer Park staff we discussed a variety of methods to cope with record numbers in the future – because we ARE coming back! Almost 400 riders gave their Bay Area Super Prestige Series presented by Accelerade a dusty kick-off in the fields behind Northern California’s velodrome and we can work on smoothing out some of course in our copious free time.

The event supplied that quintessential Paris-Roubaix experience on every lap – a hard pounding on the pave (the land-fill above the track) interspersed with 333 meters of banked smoothness and then an immediate return into the dusty chip bark and full exposure to the bumpy paths. The course turned out to be fast but ohhhh! My aching molecules. Just like P-R …..Some of the hard-core trackies who were on site yesterday from the NorCal Velodrome Association were thrilled to see this many cyclists encountering the track for the first time – that smooth banked stuff might rub off! Welcome to Hellyer Park and come back for some fixed gear fever.

The Roaring Mice took a healthy whack at the star-thistle and associated weeds on Saturday, cutting and clearing wide new paths but they and the Pilarcitos staff ran out of gas before they could create their hoped-for 7 minute course. Most races averaged 5 minute lap times which kept the scoring crew, led by Casey Kerrigan and Tom Simonson in full-time scribbling mode. Our heartfelt appreciation to Jenny, Barry, Ryan and Eric – that’s a lot of number recording.

25 riders during the day made excellent use of the Ritchey Neutral Wheel Support Tent – located just prior to the Accelerade barricades and climb the wheels enabled riders to finish and score series points – and the Roaring Mouse Team Competie ( that’s sort of Flemish/Dutch for “Competition”) standings will be announced as soon as Paule Bates can operate a keyboard again. Weed whacking all day Saturday, course taping Sunday, racing with the 45’s and course tear-down and clean-up – the hands are almost functional again.

Results were posted last night at www.pilarcitos.com (with podium pictures probably tonight) and are also available at the www.ncncaracing.com site. What’s next? 49’ers have a bye weekend so we get to use the next landfill – Candlestick Point. This year we hope to have some pump sprayers available for the 2 sections most prone to dust (Bianchi/Ritchey barricades and Accelerade chute) to dampen the dirt and keep the haze layer at a minimum.

Please review our results for mis-spellings (mis-speelings?) and missing team names and send corrections to: Tom@pilarcitos.com so we can have it fixed for the remainder of the series.

October 22 – Candlestick Point, SF
November 5 – Crocker-Amazon/Mclaren Park, SF
November 19 – Golden Gate Park
Dec. 3 – Coyote Point (CCCP)

Sacramento #3 Results and Photos

Gateway park in Penn Valley, CA played host to a great course. The course flowed like this:

Double track start to single track. A barrier in the middle of the single track. Some more double track. Another barrier with and uphill run. Double track to long paved back straight away. Pavement dumps into a deep but ride-able sand pit. The exit of the sand pit was a steep but ride-able hump. The course doubled back on itself with more paved road. The road climbed just a bit be fore turning onto some bumpy grass. Descend down and then ride back up on bumpy grass. Hop the double barriers swing around the tree and make your way back to the double track.

Race day results have been posted:

IMHO, this was truly a great course. There were some serious battles out there. The B's under 40 was a furious race with strong fight by all for the top 5 spots.
Here are a few photos of the day: http://www.velocommunity.com/plugins/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=saccx3. Thanks to all of those who contributed their own photos to the galley. You are making a difference within VeloCommunity.

Kerlin, Robinson, Scatton, Meighan, and Schott Post A Wins at CCCX Race #2

Sarah Kerlin(Velo Bella/Kona) and Justin Robinson(Cal Giant inc.) both posted solid wins in their Elite divisions at CCCX Race #2 held at the former FT. ORD Army base near Monterey. Kerlin out gunned hard charging Shelley Olds(HRS/Rock Lobster)for her second win in the past two weekends. While Robinson out fought the on form Cameron Falconer(Hunter/ DFL) for his CCCX race win. Amazingly this was Robinson's 20th Central Coast Cyclocross Elite win dating back to the series first year in 1997. Robinson swept all 8 races that first season of CCCX races where two races were held per weeekend, one Sat. and one Sun., on four different occasions.

Many racers really enjoyed the Cyclocross track this past sunday at Ft Ord. There was a long runway like pavement section where groups could stay together and drafting played a pivatol role. There were many technical sections where a racers skill level and breaking ability came to the front. And there was a board section before a pavement rise to the finish, that layed the foundation for many sprint rushes to the line for placing and race victories. This made for a great course for spectators and competitors. Infact, there was even a small amount of rain during the Elite Mens race making it really feel like Cyclocross season has arrived.

Each division had oustanding performances from many riders during the entire day of racing. Some of note were Sabine Dukes(Velo Bella/Kona) dukeing it out with the other females and taking a fine 2nd place in the Womens B race behind Rona Hung(HRS/Rock Lobster) . Jesse Scatton (Bulls Eye/East Sac.) pulled off a great win after a five way shootout in the 35+ Master A race. Julianna Perry(Team Santa Cruz/SCCCC) and Shauna Potocky(Spokesman Bicycles) had a war on two wheels which came down to a track sprint and a photo finish at the line. Luckily the CCCX scoring crew had video review and red dot technology to decide the outcome of this affair. Stella Carey (HRS/Rock Lobster) and Michael Hernandez(Safeway) both were well established in the Elite breaks for the win until untimely flat tires derailed their runs. Mitch Bramlett(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport) posted a fine win in the Master 35+ B division where there were over 30 racers total and 5 racers within a minute of the win. Chris Skulley of Santa Cruz topped a tuff Mens B group where there were 5 riders within a minute of his winning time.

The CCCX series would like to thank everyone who made an effort to come out and support the race! It was great to witness all of the Cyclocross activity and the many fine rides on the day. Be sure and go to www.cccx.org as there are many great photos of all the racing action.

Race winners on this great day of racing besides Robinson and Kerlin were........
