Sac - Rancho Seco in the Rain report

This was an entirely new course at Rancho Seco Park, within view of the grassy lawn course that was used last time. Today dawned rainy, dried a bit, and the rain resumed for the later races, making for real cyclocross mud. This Rich Maile designed course featured many twists and turns through the trees on lightly rolling terrain with some dirt, some gravel, and some bumpy grass. Major features were 3 paved zig-zags in a parking lot, a side traverse into a tricky tight turn to uphill double barriers, another set of faster double barriers, and a difficult finish with a bunny-hoppable (by some) log, a tight S-turn, another log that required dismounting, and a very short stretch to the finish line.

In the A race, Chris McGovern (Sonic CX), and Rich Maile on his single speed (Art by Opsal) ran together until Maile fell while bunny hopping a barrier. McGovern finished solo with no one in sight except for the lapped riders-everyone else! Third was taken by Jim Macdonald (East Sac Bike and Board). Jeremy Ferguson (Alan Factory) was first Junior A with 4th place overall.

The McGoverns continued their winning ways, with Hollie McGovern (Sonic) taking the women A’s. Joan Gregg had a great race, taking 2nd in front of Sarah Maile (Ventana). Women C’s was taken by Kristie Hamilton (Mike’s Bikes), increasing her lead in the women C series.

B’s Under 40 had the most dramatic finish of the day. Brendon Lydon (Davis), Josh Carling, and Ron Rouse (Rio Strada) were battling all day. With one to go, Rouse had a pedal mishap, letting a gap open in front of him. At the end, Lydon and Carling came through the final logs and S turn side by side. Lydon opted to remount after the final log, and Carling ran across the finish line, just edging Lydon by a bike length!

B’s over 40 and Single Speeds rode together. Sam Giles (Art by Opsal) lead for almost the whole race, but Shane Huntoon (Livermore Cyclery) slowly, slowly took back time in the technical areas, and was able to pass Sam with just a couple of laps to go, to hold on to a narrow win. Jim Macdonald was 3rd overall and first single speeder. John Elgart (Webcor) took 2nd in the singles and 5th overall.

C’s was taken by Steve Offerman, followed by Reese Gary and Steven Terra.

Thanks to the Sacramento Golden Wheelmen for promoting, Paula Mara for officiating, and Voler and Clif for sponsoring another race in the Sacramento Cyclocross Series.

The 9th race will take place next Saturday, Nov. 18 at Condon Park in Grass Valley. This popular course features twists and turns through the towering trees of the Sierra foothills, all either uphill or downhill.

Finals will be at Granite Regional Park (not to be confused with Granite Beach-this one is just off of Hwy 50 at Power Inn Rd) on Sat. Dec. 3. Overall prizes will be awarded, including winners’ jerseys, Giant Bikes for top male and female, cash, and prizes. This race is also a fund raiser for the McClatchy High School Track (running) Team, and takes place entirely on fast, smooth, wide cross country running trails.

The SGW set-up crew created a great course for a wet day at Rancho Seco. With the mud, by the end of the day, it was almost East Coast style cross.

From Tarik Saleh:

I took a bunch of pics and movies at the USGP cross in Boulder and wrote mini
reports:

I think Justin Robinson, Ben JM and possibly Sarah Kerlin are seen in the videos from the Norcal crowd, among others.

Thanks for the link, Tarik!

Official White Hill CX Race Report

October 28th 2006

Things fell in place nicely for the fist ever White Hill Middle School Benefit Cyclo-Cross race, in Fairfax. Race organizers were up late Friday night, and up early Saturday morning putting the finishing touches on what proved to be a challenging and stimulating course. Tom Simpson and Company at Pilarcitos Cycle Sports generously donated the use of their equipment, a priceless contribution. Special thanks also to Julia at Paradigm Cycles for her support as well as the rest of the Proman / Paradigm Elite women's team. Other contributors included Cliff and Noah's bagels.

Josh Snead and Simon Vickers of the Rock Lobster squad were at the front of the Elite men's field most of the race, with Snead pulling off the win. Local Rachel Lloyd (Proman / Paradigm Cycles) put in her typical performance with a solid win - coming in close behind was Shelly Olds. Jordi Cortes put in a strong performance to take the Masters 35+ A men's race. Mountain biking matriarch Jacquie Phelan put in a solid performance in the elite women's race. Richard Blanco 1 speeded his way to victory in the single speed event.

34 kids mounted up and sampled their first taste of Cyclo-Cross, doing a complete lap of the 1.5 mile course, including a fairly brutal run up. Tommy Breeze took the 13 and over win, followed closely by Kamaron Rathod and Keenan Pope. In the 9-12 yr old category - Riley Venne and Mick Bruckner of Big Swingin' Cycles took one - two with Dwight Scales rounding out the podium. In the 8 and under category - Stefan Venne and Sam Bruckner (Big Swingin' Cycles) were followed closely by Riley Moore.

Organizers and the school community were so pleased with the inaugural event, things are already in the works for next year's event, which is tentatively scheduled for the last weekend in September.
