Fitzsimmons, Baker, Kramer, and Abele Post "A" Wins at CCCX#4

Nearly 200 racers competed at the Central Coast Cyclo Cross Series Race #4, held at beautiful Manzanita Park in Prundale. Racers were faced with bright sunshine and cool winds on a course that featured a little bit of everything for the die hard cross racers in attendance. There were some challenging technical sections, some sand spots, a few soft grass sections , one solid run up, and many fun turns. There was also a leg burning pavement climb that riders had to tackle each lap. The grass sections turned into deep lines of grassy mud as the day went on. And the CCCX course designer was already sweating the job of making the pristine lawn sections look as if hundreds and hundreds of bike trips across it never happened. This series goes for quality courses first and foremost. And if it takes weeks to re-do the sod, in the name of some good cross routes and fun riding, then thats life for a CCCX course designer.

Mens Elite division saw Jonathon Baker(Primus Mootry) of Boulder Colorado win impressively by 22 seconds over National 40+ champion Mark Noble(Amgen Cycling), and by 2:04 over Simon Vickers(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars). Baker went extremely hard at the gun, and established a early lead. While the determined Noble, who was fresh off his US Gran Prix win one week prior, worked his way thru the field to join him at the front. Also chasing the leaders were Brett Hondorp(Sycip Racing), Brian Vernor(Hunter Cycles/Pajaro Rollerz), Ben Dodge( Rock Lobster/Traugott guitars), Jason Rahlwes(Fox Racing Shocks), Pat Rocchi(Norcal Velo), Aron Bonar(Sycip Racing), and Heath Maddox(Sycip Racing). As well as Wyandt, Flores, and Kereluk. Baker then gapped the flying "Brit" Noble, and didnt let anything stop him from the win and his instant cash payout. Not even a stray dog that crossed Bakers path with two laps to go could slow him down. Baker left some cyclo-cross tire tred marks on the startled poodle and held on for the win. The dog meanwhile asked if it get get some of his puppy friends and pose as a set of barriers in future CCCX races. David Wyandt(Father) took 4th place 30 seconds behind Vickers. Wyandt has been racing very consistant and this was his third 4th place CCCX finish in the past three races. The powerful riding Vickers has had many solid performances this season. He has had a stellar cross campaign even though he was feeling a little under the weather on this day. Anastasio Flores(Cal Giant Inc.) held off Aaron Kereluk(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars) by a bike length to claim 5th on the day. Flores spent lap after lap chasing down the skilled cross racer Kereluk. And each time up the pavement climb he would inch closer and closer, until he finally joined Kereluk. Hondorp came across the line one minute later in 7th position on the day. Another minute later the duo of Vernor and Dodge finished 8th and 9th. And Jason Rahlwes rounded out the top 10, 40 seconds a drift of the Vernor, Dodge pairing.

Ann Fitzsimmons(Velo Bella) claimed her second CCCX win in as many races by dominating the other women and taking first by over 2 minutes. Fitzsimmons seemed fresh and at home on the challenging curcuit that had ample traction from recent rains. Fitzsimmons followed Stella Carey on lap one before throwing it down and opening a gap. The ever improving Fitzsimmons is really finding some nice form as of late, and comented that she raced the B division two years ago at this same venue. Now she is racing for money and claimed a cash payout as she crossed the line in first. Stella Carey(Kelly Bike Co.) took the silver medal and a small cash payout for her days work. Carey mentioned that she was growing somewhat tired racing seemingly every weekend in a row. But really wanted to compete at Manzanita Park, a place she has tasted success at in the past. The consistant Carey held off hard charging Lori Cox(Velo Girls) by 20 seconds to claim the silver medal and one spot higher on the podium. Cox, riding out of San Jose, has had some strong efforts this season. Her cross skills are developing each week and she should be able to make a medal winning appearance before too long.
Master 35+ Mens division was won by District champion Henry Kramer(Cal Giant Inc.) in a race that was hottly contested and skillfully won. The cunning and crafty Krammer held of Mark Howland(Black Market Racing) by the smallest of margins and claimed a instant cash payout for the win. This race saw some serious tactics come into play as a group of six riders established a talented break. This six-some featured Kramer, Howland, local legend Larry Hibbard(Family Cycling Center), Michael Matthews(Buy Cell), Tim Thompson(Euro Cycling Imports), and Gannon Myall(Cal Giant Inc.). Giving chase in the next group were Brock Dickie(Buy Cell), Keith DeFiebre(Lapierre/Ritchey/Bay Bikes), Charles Hess(Bicycle trip), Christopher Daugherty(Infineon Raceway), and speedy Brij Lunine(Missing Link Bianchi). Hibbard was the first to test the open waters of the front, and attacked on the climb to create a solo gap. But it was Howland and Kramer who joined forces and brought the ripped and muscular Hibbard back into fold. Hibbard looked to best his break away companions Kramer and Howland on the final lap, but two last lap crashes inside the final 1/4 mile sent him reeling back to 3rd place and the bronze medal, plus a little gas money for his stellar effort. So the huge cash payout for 1st came down to Krammer looking for his second CCCX win in a row, and Howland who wont give a inch when it comes to close racing. In the end, an uphill sprint for the win, it was Kramer by a measly 1 second at the line. The next chasing group that formed was a four-some featuring Matthews, Thompson, Hess, and the Missing Link/Bianchi powered Lunine. Absent from those four was Gannon Myall who was "rider down" in a time costly crash. These four on form riders worked well together and in the end they were only 30 seconds off of the winning time. It was a good effort for all these racers and a fun race to witness. Seperated by seconds at the line their finishing order was Buy Cell- Matthews, Euro Cycling Imports -Thompson, Bicycle Trip- Hess, and the Bianchi riding Lunine. Myall limped across the line next in 8th on the day. The Lapierre/Ritchey sponsored Defiebre, who was racing against doctors orders after a broken collar bone suffered only 4 weeks earlier, placed 9th on the day after a gallant one shoulder effort. Hard riding Buy Cell racer Brock Dickie rounded out the top 10 with Christopher Daugherty finishing next only ten seconds later. The rest of the top fifteen on the day were Philip Sims(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC), Eric Bustos(Cal Giant Inc.), Ruben Villarreal(Velo Pro), and Dick Vanderluit(Euro Cycling Imports) in that order.

Master Mens 45+ division saw Mark Abele(Boure) remain un defeated for the series winning his fourth CCCX race in a row. This win was his closest of the series as Jim Gentes(Family Cycling Center) kept the time gap to a respectable margin of only 30 seconds at the line. Gentes is slowly catching up to the super charged and super smooth Boure sponsored Abele. And Gentes gauranted to challenge Abele in the next two CCCX races to deny the able riding Abele a undefeated CCCX campaign. Doug Hatfield(Family Cycling Center) was third on the day another 10 seconds after Gentes. Hatfield has now tasted third place for the second CCCX race in a row and has showed solid racing form this season. Anton McGready(Boure) has made a fine rise back to the front of the group. McGready, a past CCCX series champion, is a living cyclo-cross legend. He is as experienced a racer you could find in the sport of cyclo-cross. And he is finding his legs at a perfect time leading into the Super Prestige series finals held this weekend near San Fransisco. Joe Fabris(LGBRC/Easton/Specialized) rounded out the top five. While the rest of the top ten looked like this, Santa Cruz's Mark Michel(Bicycle Trip), Los Gato's Steve Stewart(LGBRC/Easton/Specialized), Santa Cruz's Thomas Sullivan(Amsterdam Bicycles), Santa Cruz's Kem Akol(Bicycle Trip), and San Jose's Frank Cuaresma(Cal Giant Inc.) in that order.

David Samples Jr.(Cal Giant Inc.) was the winner of the B Mens division. This was Samples third win of the series in as many starts. This was a really fine win for the new father, as there were a total of 10 riders within one minute of the win. This race was very tactical as groups formed and then disintegrated throughout the 45 minute saga. In the end it was the on form and stupendous riding Samples who walked away with the gold medal on the day. Brian Rogers(Sycip Racing) was the other racer in this division to post a CCCX win this year, taking race #2 at Ft ord. Yet this is the second race in a row the talented Rogers has been relagated to the silver medal by Samples. This time it was only 8 seconds that seperated the two at the line. Prunedale local Stacey Sell(Fox Racing Shox) claimed the bronze medal on the day with a fine ride finishing only 11 seconds behind The Sycip sponsored Rogers. Sell most likely was testing out the dirt and conditions as the race grew closer, and he used his local advantage to his best performance of the series. Park rangers noticed a racer preparing for the event as its date grew near, and that rider was most likely the forward thinking Sell. This home field advantage clearly helped as Sell held off Chris Coffey(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars) by a scant 2 seconds at the line. Meanwhile, Cole Rasmussen(Specialized) had his hands full with Tim Granshaw(Lapierre/Ritchey), Tim Simanski(Roaring Mouse Cycles), and Andrew Hammond(Specialized). Rasmussen, Granshaw, Simanski, and Hammond finished in that order. They put on a great show as the four riders were seperated by only 9 seconds at the line. It was cross racing displayed at its finest as these skilled riders fought for position and placings on the final few laps. Also chasing hard was legend Mark Fitzsimmons(Fox Racing Shocks) who ended up 9th on the day only 8 seconds behind 8th placed Hammond. Only five seconds later came hard charging Geoff Luttrell(Strongbadia) and his fine ride placed him 10th on the day. This is a very respectable result as this B mens group was the largest division of the day. Chance Regina(Morgan Stanley), Uri Freedman(Borracho/Bike-Co-op), Nick Sims(Specialized), and Morgan Fletcher(SF Sport & Spine) had a solid tussle for the next placings on the day. Those four riders were neck, neck, neck, and neck as the finish line came near. At the line it was only 8 seconds seperating the four headed monster that their group was forming. With the Mountain View rider Regina taking bragging rights out of this four pack of racers. In 15th on the day was Andrew Yee(Alpha Sigma Sandbag) who had his hands full with So Cal racer Josh Rebol(Echolon Santa Barbara). Yee out smarted and out pedaled the rebel with out a cause Rebol, and nipped him at the line for that 15th place by only 2 small seconds. Geoff Wilcox, Isaiah Stackhouse(SF Sport & Spine), Shawn Locker(DeSalvo Cycles), and Ryan Schlichting(SF Sport & Spine) rounded out the top 20 on the day in that order. Top twenty riders diserve a fine round of applause as this B Mens group was packed with talent and just to make top twenty on this day was a great ride.

Mens 35+ B division saw Murray Swanson(Peninsula Velo) remain perfect for his efforts in the series winning his 4th CCCX race in a row. Swanson took another gold medal home back to Woodside besting a solid group of racers. Swanson has shown great riding ability during this series and it still remains to be seen if he can run the table for the CCCX races in 2005. Second place on the day was Shane Huntoon(Livermore Cyclery) coming across the line 1 minute behind the high flying Swanson. Huntoon was the Sacramento series champion this year, and he marveled at the fine lay-out and solid running races of the CCCX series. Huntoon said this was his best ride of the year, and he was using other riders to pace himself in chase of the undefeated Swanson. Brett Lambert(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport) and Tao Bernardi(Pegasus Bicycles/Allegiant Air) had a fight on there hands behind the BMX promoting Huntoon. Lambert and Bernardi were locking horns during the 45 minute affair and in the end it was Scots Valley's Lambert getting the best of Dublin's own Bernardi by a mere 5 seconds at the line. Rounding out the top ten were Jeffrey Bramlett in 5th, who is having a very fine cross racing season. Bob Barwick the Family Cycling Center shop manager in 6th place. Chris Baker held off Dave Scindehette(Pegasus Bicycles/Allegiant Air) by a tiny 2 second advantage to claim 7th on the day. Eric Lowe was 9th on the day and Deric Dangzalan took the 10th position.

Jeff Crofton(Peninsula Velo) riding out of Half Moon Bay took a fine win in the Mens 45+ B division. Crofton was definitly on a good day of form as he bested 2nd place by a whoping 2:06 at the line. This was the second win of the CCCX series for the talented Crofton who was the victor in race #1 at Montery Peninsula College. William Hall from Monterey had one of his best rides to date taking a fine 2nd place and the silver medal. This was hard fought as Hall had two riders breathing down his neck and had to use all his skill and energy to hold them off. Only one second behind Hall was Bruce Lodge(Black Market Racing) who proudly took the bronze medal back up to the foothills in Tuolumne. Lodge was also being shadowed by Erik Salander(Peninsula Velo) who took 4th on the day only 4 seconds behind Lodge. Riding out of Salinas, Peter Sherrill(Mt. Nittany Wheelworks) was a fine fifth place on the day. This was a fine ride by Sherrill as he had the daring one, Scott DeLaurentis(LGBRC/Easton/Specialized) chasing as hard as possible from behind. DeLaurentis had to settle for 6th place on the day. Making up the rest of the top ten for the day were Boulder Creek's Matt Dunstan(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport), Palo Alto's Wayne Smith(SCCC/Le Village Imports), Santa Cruz's Dwight Goss(Redwood Riders), and Sunnyvale's Bob Malheiro(SCCC/Le Village Imports).

Beverly Chaney(Raoring Mouse Cycles) was laying her three race winning streak on the line for the CCCX series at race #4. And the Carmel resident did not disapoint her fan club as she took her 4th straight win by a scant 26 seconds. Applying constant pressure the entire race to Chaney was the strong riding Melanie Dominguez(Bicycle Trip). Dominguez was trying her hardest to erase the defficit to Chaney, but Chaney kept her at bay and held on for the win and gold medal. Lovely Julianna Perry and Melinda Jones(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC) had a great race going on. They were fighting back and forth during the 45 minute event, and nothing could sperate the two cyclo-cross racers. So in the end it came to a photo finish and video footage showed a tie at the line. This could have been because they were holding hands as the they finished, in a fine show of sportsmanship. But they were both given same time as their finish was so close video footage couldnt even decide the placings. Henrietta Stern(Hot Flash Chicks) worked hard the entire race and did her finest effort to chase Amy Abele(Velo Bella). Abele, riding out of Concord, had her hands full with the determined Pacific Grove resident Stern. When Henrietta rides she is very stern faced and super serious, and this effort enabled her to top Abele by a small margin of 4 seconds at the line.

Category B Women saw Katrina Baumsteiger(Black Market Racing) win for the 4th time in 4 starts at the CCCX series. This particular win was her most impressive as she bested second place Janel Lodge(Black Market Racing) by a whoping 2:37 at the line. Baumsteiger riding out of Templeton never gave up her pace even after she had established a solid gap on the rest of the ladies. Strong riding Santa Cruz's Lodge, had finished within seconds of the speedy Baumsteiger the last two CCCX races. But on this day the Black Market team mates were sperated by a few minutes. Shauna Potocky(Family Cycling Center) had her best race of the series to claim a solid third place on the afternoon. Potocky is slowly finding her racing form as the season wears on, and with her friends cheering her on she had a great race to claim the bronze CCCX custom medal. Riding out of San Jose, Michelle Lambert(Sycip Racing) just missed the medal placings and claimed 4th place. Jana Roberts(Lapierre/Ritchey) was next to cross the finish and she was a fine 5th on the day. Roberts is a new sign for Team Lapierre/Ritchey and her strong riding and kind disposition is a great addition to the newly developed Lapierre/Ritchey factory team. Racing out of Oakland, Julian Foley(SF Sport & Spine) was 6th place for the race. Trailing the hard charging Foley were Julie Brothers(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars) and Julie Starling(Velo Bela). The consistant Starling shined like a shining star in her Velo Bella team kit. Five of the ladies names started with "J" in this talented group of cross competitors, and all we needed was Juli Schmidt(Lapierre/Ritchey) present to make the "J" names fully dominate the group.

Junior Women saw the future sensation of cycling Tania Lokmagozian, out of Monterey, fully establish herself as the series leader. The powerful and clean riding Lokmagozian won her 4th stright race of the CCCX series and has firmly put her grips on the championship trophy. I look for this impressively gifted competitor to make some more major results in her racing future. Her father is a very talented rider and Tania looks to follow in his footsteps, or tire tracks, and continue her winning ways. Another impressive junior was Meghan Barr(Cal Giant Inc) riding out of Watsonville. Barr was making her Central Coast Cyclo-Cross series debut and she showed that in the coming years it is likely she will be at the front of many races.

Junior Men 13 & Under saw Team Bicycle trip continue their dominating team tactics taking the top three places and taking 5 out of the top 8 placings in the race. Leading the way was series leader Noah Karter(Bicycle Trip) who claimed the gold medal and his 4th straight win in the CCCX series. Karter is showing no mercy on the rest of the 13 & under racers, and looks poised to bring the CCCX series championship back to Santa Cruz. Also riding out of Santa Cruz Raymond Mendoza(Bicycle Trip) is showing great promise and has many CCCX medals to prove this to his class mates. Mendoza was 2nd on the day holding off team mate Trent Knebel(Bicycle Trip) by a small margin. Gilroy's own Andrew Lainier(San Jose Bike Club) crashed the Bicycle Trip party and took a solid 4th place on the day. Darik Thunstrom(Bicycle Trip) had one of his best rides of the series and took the 5th position on the day. Next across the line were Carson Cole from Watsonville, Kendall Barr(Cal Giant Inc.) out of Watsonville, and Jordan Vanderstoep(Bicycle Trip) from Soquel.

Junior 18 & Under division had Logan Loader(Alan Factory) take the hole shot and never surrender the lead. Loader was the 2005 Surf City Series champion and is looking to be tuff to stop in the CCCX series as well. Loader was showing off a little during this race as he had his girl friend in attendance and even pulled up in a flashy Volvo showing the other juniors he has passed his DMV test. So with his girlfriend watching and his new drivers liscence in his pocket there was no stoping him on this day. Chasing hard was Jeremy Blalock(Joselyn's) who ended up droping 1:27 to the fired up Loader at the line. Blalock and Loader look headed for a showdown at the next CCCX race to be held in Ft. Ord at a race route were Blalock put the hurt on Loader the last time a race was held there. Blalock put over 30 seconds into Loader that day, and he will need to cross the line ahead of his rival if he has any chance to win the CCCX series for 2005. Jack Fogelquist(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport) took the bronze medal on the day in a photo finish over his team mate Taylor Shamshoian. These two racers have put on many fine racing spectacles over the past few races and this race was another fine show. It took a video camera to distinguish the racer who could claim the bronze medal, and the judges gave the nod to Fogelquist by less then 1 milimeter, or .0000001 of a second. Racing for Bicycle Trip Kyle Vanderstoep was 5th on the day.

C Men Division saw Jimmy Sopko(Bay Bikes) re establish bragging rights at the shop as he bested his break away companion and co worker Jeremy Keyes(Bay Bikes) by a tiny 9 second margin. These team mates raced a solid event and seperated themselves from the other racers as the event wore on. Keyes had to chase down Sopko, who took a early solo lead, and the 2 riders were faced with a last lap dash for the win. Sopko took the front and slowly opened up some time over the last 1/2 mile of the race, and in front of his girlfriend Sopko was able to celebrate the win. Keyes was not happy with second and claimed he will surely change the order at the next CCCX race to be held on his home course of Ft Ord. Riding out of Campbell Travis Tonn(San Jose Bike Club) had a great ride and was able to walk away with the bronze medal in the end. Tonn was only 30 seconds behind 2nd place and put a full minute into 4th place Brad Helper. Hepler, riding out of Los Gatos, was riding alone for most of the race and held off 5th place Alex Anderson(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC) by 18 seconds. Top 10 on the day in this very competitive group were Troy Mayfield(Spokesman), Monterey's Ned Mason, Walnut Creek's Chris Coffee, Charles Meehan(Ride SFO), and Gregory Kuhnen(Ride SFO), in that order.

Michael Matthews(Buy-Cell) won his third single speed race in a row at the CCCX series. Matthews had a solid 35+ A Men race earlier in the day, and backed it up with a single speed win. Dan Sovereign(Bullseye/ESBWB) kept Mathews in shouting distance and only finished 30 seconds behind the on form Buy-Cell racer. Local boy Eric Ebberoth was third on the day and contiuned his fine single speed riding. Ebberoth knows that the high school mtn Bike season is coming up very fast. So he is trying to remain race ready as the high school opener gets closer. Michael Martin(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC) was 4th. Twenty seconds later Tim Cannard(Buy-Sell) sprinted across the line to round out the top 5 on the day. The rest of the top 10 looked like this, Mike Mann from Marina, A.J. Ataie(Pegasus bicycles/Allegiant Air) from Danville, Kevin Pelley(Scary Fast) from Salinas, Joe Fabris(LGBRC/Easton/Specialized) from Los Gatos, and Justin Mann(Calvary Chapel) of Marina, in that finishing order.

CCCX#3 Extended Report

Fitzsimmons, Wicks, Kramer, and Abele post A wins at CCCX#3

The Central Coast Cyclo-Cross series race #3 was help under perefect summer like conditions this past Sunday Nov. 13th. Blue skys and sunshine didnt dampen the enthusiasm of the many racers who competed on the fun and sometimes technical course held at the Day Camp in Ft Ord Monterey. Rapturous interest and excitement were displayed as Kona's Barry Wicks showed up to compete, giving a prelude to the big races looming on the horizon. The Vello Bella US GP of Cyclo-Cross and the GP Clark Natwick US GP Finals are only days away, and this led to some great racing as local athelets prepare for the big races ahead.

Elite Men was a feature event as Barry Wicks, now a local boy living in Watsonville, showed up to demonstrate his cross skills. The Jauques-Maynes's(Ben & Andy) have had a stranglehold on this division over the past years, and now it was up to Andy Jauques-Maynes(Cal. Giant Inc.) to lay his unbeaten streak on the line against the tall, lanky Wicks. Newly crowned District Champion Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.), who went 2 years undefeated in the begining of the CCCX series years ago, was also ready to give it a go. So at the start it was no surprise to see those three and the bronze medalist from the District race Simon Vickers(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars) establish a break on the first lap. Only a lap later it became a two man showdown as Wicks and Jauques-Maynes were on their own to see who would collect the instant cash payout waiting at the finish. Both of these two racers were featured in VeloNews for fastest cross racers in America 2005 and they didnt disapoint the fans who remained to see the main event. Jauques-Maynes was racing on 24 hours rest and the fresh legged Wicks took full advantage of this, never stopping the attacks until he made a gap on the over raced Jauques-Maynes. Bouncing Barry Wicks also Bunny Hopped a large log that most everyone dismounted for and this combined with aggressive riding lead him to the instant cash payout win and the custom 1st place medal. Wicks said he really liked the course and had fun on the flowing curcuit that featured a little of everything. In the end Jauques-Maynes was only 45 seconds back to claim the second place cash payout. Vickers rode a steady race to claim 3rd place a few minutes later, showing the extreme pace that was put on by the VeloNews highlighted duo. Vickers has had consistant results all year long and is proving to be one of the heavy hitters in central California cross racing. Robinson was seen watching at the end of the race from the sidelines, and mentioned he was tired! Winning the districts the day before can do that to a racer! A solid 4th place finish was taken by David Wyandt(Father) who finished 30 seconds in front of 5th placed Anastasio Flores(Cal Giant Inc.). Aaron Kereluk(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars), Jeffrey Hantman(Clif Bar), Brett Hondorp(Sycip), Jesse Mayberry(Lapierre/Ritchey), and Brian Vernor(Hunter Cycles/Pajaro Rollerz) rounded out the top ten in that order. Hats off to the Lapierre/Ritchey rider Mayberry who is slowly making a name for himself in the A field, upgrading after a solid run of B races this past season.

Elite Women saw Ann Fitzsimmons(Velo Bella) take the hole shot at the gun, and never look back on her way to an impressive win. Maybe it was the cheering (Whip Cracking) from her husband, the legendary Mark Fitzsimmons that motivated her. Either way, the Velo Bella rider held the front from the begining and showed her form is peaking at the right time leading into the big events held at the end of the year. Fitzsimmons claimed a cash payout 17 seconds in front of hard charging Kelly Bike Company racer Stella Carey. Carey had a hard fought duel with newly crowned District champion Josie Beggs(Starbucks/Cal Giant Inc.) and the difference at the line was only 2 seconds. Their respective instant cash payout was the same, but Carey could take solice in the silver CCCX medal which was a tad brighter then the bronze one recieved by the up and coming Beggs. Shelley Olds(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars) had a incredible ride coming back from a high speed pavement get off suffered a few weeks ago at the Candle Stick park race. Olds was attacking the chase group and showing fine riding ability. In the end she was only 8 seconds down to the third placed finisher Beggs. So look to Olds to continue her fine riding in some of the next few races of the busy central California cross season. Hillary Daniels(Norcal Velo) started slow but worked her way back into contention and rounded out the top five with a solid effort.

Master 35+ Mens A field was strong as usual, except for some injured racers missing who usually hold down spots at the front of the pack. John Funke(Sycip) and Keith DeFiebre(Lapierre/Rithcey) will surely make a return to racing soon and until then there will never be a lack of true studs to drive the front. Others who could make a case to hold down top spots could have been National Champion Alan Coates or juiced up cross star Michael Hernandez, or newly crowned District Champ Rich Maile, or the on form David Eastwood, but they chose to sit this one out . Newly crowned 45+ District champion Henry Kramer(Cal Giant Inc.) decided to go for the cash payout and do battle in this 35+ group that boasts the most competitive racing of any group in central California. Standing in his way of the instant cash payout were racers like Chris D'Alusio(Morgan Stanley/Specialized/24Hour Fitness) who hasnt lost a CCCX race in his past 9 attempts. Or Gannon Myall (Cal Giant Inc.) who is riding really well and ready for his National call up this weekend in the Vello Bella US GP race. Or the mighty Mark Howland(Black Market Racing) who's Thor like stength is always somewhere near the front of the field. Or even series leader Tim Thompson(Euro Cycling Imports) who is having a stellar cross campaign and has Pro national MTB experience in each pedal stroke. So Krammer had his hands full, and with a little luck and fine racing form, he claimed his huge cash payout within seconds of crossing the line first in this stacked division. These five riders, D'Alusio-Kramer-Myall-Howland-Thompson, established a early break on the rest of the field, and it was mother nature who played the first card in deciding the winner. D'Alusio caught a downed tree branch in his drive train and this led to a bike change and loss of crucial time in this hammer fest of a race. In the end he was one lap short of catching back to the lead four and had to settle for 5th and an end to his win streak before it reached double digits. This left team mates Kramer and Myall to drive the pace and see if they could shake Howland and Thompson. Giving chase to the lead group was Christopher Daugherty(Infineon Raceway), Tim Watson(Velo Bella), Robert Meighan(Clif Bar), Charles Hess(Bicycle Trip), Brock Dickie(Buy Cell), Paul Janney(ABS), Thomas Fiex(Webcor/Alto Velo), and Brij Lunine(Missing Link/Bianchi). And on the final lap it was the break away group of four within seconds of eachother heading up the final climb with 5 more minutes left of racing. Myall took the front at the top of the climb, but Krammer put in a huge effort to re take the front and dice his way to the win and instant cash 7 seconds ahead of his Cal Giant Inc. team mate Myall. A mere six seconds later the incredibly strong pair of Howland and Thompson crosssed the line seperated by only a wheel length, with Howland taking his second consecutive money performance in the CCCX series and the bronze medal. The rest of the top 10 looked like this Daugherty, Watson, Meighan, Mathews, and Hess.

45+ Mens A field was a hard fought race with Mark Abele(Boure) staying undefeated in the CCCX 2005 series and winning by 1:03 over "Jammin" Jim Gentes(Family Cycling Center) with Doug Hatfield(Family Cycling Center) another 30 seconds a drift claiming the bronze medal. Gentes and Hatfield were the only riders to stay within 2 minutes of the screaming fast Abele who is showing no mercy to the rest of the 45+ group this season. This also could have been because Abele was recieving false information from a spectator who was telling him that Gentes was catching up! This led to Abele sprinting wildly on the run up as if his win streak was in jeopardy. Abele ended up putting three minutes into Steve Stewart(LGBRC Easton/Specialized) and almost 4 minutes into the smooth riding Edwin Rambuski(Balck Market Racing). Other top finishers in this super competitive division were Mark Michell(Bicycle Trip), Thomas Sullivan(Amsterdam Bicycles), "Fast" Frank Cuaresma(Cal Giant Inc.), Dave Samples Sr.(Cal Giant Inc.), Scott Martin(Bicycle Trip), Kim Akol(Bicycle Trip), and Jim Beuselinck(Euro Cycling Imports), placing in that order. David Samples Sr. had a incredible ride on this perfect day for a summer suffer fest held in November. Samples chased down his team mate Cuaresma lap after lap making up a large deficit during the race, only to fall a spot behind at the finish in another one of their epic duels!

The B Mens race was won by David Samples Jr.(Cal Giant Inc.). Samples was the winner of race#1 in the CCCX series, and he shot to the front of this race, testing out the other riders to see who would chase. Making the pace behind were Brian Rogers(Sycip Racing), Patrick Williams, Geoff Luttrell(Strongbadia), Andrew Hammond(Specialized), and little Logan Loader(Alan Factory). Samples kept applying pressure and slowly opened up a gap on the rest of the field. He was searching for his second win of the series, and racing in front of a large group of family memebers and friends. Thus the motivated Samples rode solo for the majority of the race to score a fine win. Samples now is 2 for 2 in wins this season in the CCCX series, he missed race #2. But there is a throw out race in the points total for the year, and the last race is double points, so he is still in line for a series championship. Brian Rogers never gave up the chase and only finished 26 seconds down to claim the custom silver medal for 2nd place. Amazingly, Logan Loader pulled off a third place finish in this competitive B mens group. Loader, the newly crowned District junior champion was riding his third race of the weekend. He won both his other races, and was searching for three medals in one weekend, and pulled it off! Loader held off the tenacious Patrick Williams by 7 seconds to claim the final medal position of this group. Strong riding Lutrell was 5th on the day just 2 seconds later. While the up and coming Specialized rider Hammond never gave in to the pain and finished only 6 seconds later. Stan Barrett(Cycle Smart) crossed the line in the 7th position and held off a hard charging group that contained many established cross racers. Tim Granshaw(Lapierre/Ritchey) chased as hard as possible and was only 14 seconds behind the bicycle smart riding Barrett. Granshaw is slowly finiding his form and looks to finish the season off strongly. Legend Mark Ftzsimmons(Fox Racing Shox) had a tussle on his hands with Ryan Schlichting(SF Sport and Spine) and Eric Bergstorm(LGBRC Easton.Specialized). Fitzsimmons had to use all of his craftiness and gile to hold those riders off at the line . The consistant Schlichting was only 9 seconds behind at the finsh, and the battle proven Bergstrom was only 3 seconds back at the line. Tim Roehrl, Brian Muck, Johannes Schmidt(Lapierre/Ritchey), and Uri Friedman(Borracho/Bike-Co-op) rounded out the top 15 for the day. Top 20 finishers were Tim Simanski(Roaring Mouse Cycles), Morgan Fletcher(SF Sport and Spine), Isaiah Stackhouse(SF Sport and Spine), Francisco Luna, and Gregg Machez(Equipe Le Matin) in that order. Of note, David Pederson(Lapierre/Ritchey) was having a solid ride until a mechanical cost him much time. But the determined Pederson found time to retrieve another bike and finish out the event showing great dedication and desire.

Master Men 35+ B division was won by series leader Murray Swanson(Peninsula Velo). Swanson, riding out of Woodside, started slowly but picked his way thru the field as time went on. He finished 26 seconds ahead of Brett Lambert(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport). Mitch Bramlett, who is showing fine racing ability this season claimed the bronze medal another 20 second later. Both Brammlett brothers never bow out of a race and always bother to give their best in any situation never boasting of their accomplishments. Jeffrey finished 7th on the day. Bob Barwick(Family Cycling Center) had his best result of the series finishing a solid 4th on the day. Barwick who is always wearing a smile as shop manager at Family Cycling Center was only 20 seconds off of the podium on the day. Another shop employee who has had a great cross campaign is Chris Rodriguez, who races for, and works for, Pegasus Bicycles in Danville. The kind and smart Rodriguez was 5th on the day and held off hard charging Tao Bernardi by a scant 2 seconds. Rounding out the top 15 were Paul Bates(Roaring Mouse Cycles), Chris Baker, Deric Dangzaian, Scott Zavack(Black Watch), William Muir(Stevenson creek/European),Shawn Williams(On The Couch), Grant Stoner(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC), and Benoit Dubuisson(SCCC/Le Village Imports) in that order.

Master Men 45+ B division had Keith Henderson(Team Bicycle Trip) ride to a convincing win by 1:40 over 2nd place. Henderson, who is also an established mtn bike racer, rode hard from the begining and never let off the pace. In 2004 Henderson pushed star series champ Paris Loader to the brink in the CCCX Mtn Bike series only to fall short in the end. So he took revenge on the 45+ field, and proved he can win cross races as well as mtn bike ones too. Eric Salander(Peninsula Velo) claimed the silver medal on the day holding off a strong group of riders by mere seconds. One of these riders was the dashing series leader Scott "Dino" DeLaurentis(LGBRC Easton/Specialized). The dominating DeLaurentis never likes to lose and did all in his power to claim the bronze medal on the day. Thus displaying his never say die attitude and showing others what a true competitor he really is. William Hall was only one second out of the medal spots and had to settle for 4th on the day. Other riders to make the top placings were Peter Sherrill(Mt Nittany Wheelworks), Matt Dunstan(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport), Bruce Lodge(Black Market Racing), Richard Robinson, Larry Morin(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC), Len Tabor(Velo Club Monterey), and Larry Billard(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars) in that order.

Master Women 35+ had series leader Beverly Chaney(Roaring Mouse) ride to a solid win by 33 seconds over 2nd placed Melanie Dominguez(Bicycle Trip) Chaney, sporting a new stealth Felt cross bike, has made incredible improvement over the past few years. She now rides around like a established star, when just months ago she was starting the racing game. But winning races, and National Sport division mtn bike titles will make a rider more focussed and more determined to win. So now Chaney is really enjoying her fine form and showing what a great athelete she really is. Dominguez who styles some of the prettiest racing clothes had a great ride and took home a silver medal for her work. Hard charging and gutsy performer Melinda Jones(Team Santa Cruz), who really has a great time out at the events was 3rd on the day taking home the bronze medal. Amazingly, Henrietta Stern(Hot Flash Chicks) who was just getting to know her beautiful brand new Bianchi cross ride came across in a fine 4th place position. Stern, who is very kind and always happy, was nervous about riding her new bike. But her time on the new machine was excellent and she looks foward to more races on the official cross bike. Amy Abele(Velo Bella) rounded out the top five on the day. Other finishers of note were Julianna Perry, Samantha Sommer(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC), Winona Hubbard(El Gato Rojo), and Roni Babeck in that order.

Womens B division saw Team Black market racing claim the top two placings with a fine display of cross skills and riding. Leading the way on the day was Katrina Baumsteiger riding out of Templeton who bested the spectacularly fit Janel Lodge riding out of Santa Cruz. Black Market Racing has a great stable of racing individuals and this team usually makes a fine impact at most races they compete in. Only 15 seconds out of 2nd place was aggressive Alexis Alexander(Power Bar) who claimed the bronze medal on the day. Alexander is racing out of Redwood City and had a very good ride on this course that was fun, as riders cruised on single track trails tucked in the shady trees. Alyse Weyman(Velo Bella) missed the medals to claim 4th, but had a solid ride and sported her popular Velo Bella team kit in high fashion. Another good spirited rider who is making a return to the cross racing scene is Shauna Potocky(Family Cycling Center). This race her seat actually stayed on the seat post and thus she was able to make a nice top 5 finish. Juli Schmidt(Lapierre/Ritchey) was fresh off her silver medal at the District cross event, and racing on 24 hours rest took a fine 6th place finish. Other riders to race well were Julian Foley(SF Sport & Spine), Julie Brothers(Rock Lobster/Traugott Guitars), Ella Lawrence(Norcal Velo), and Julie Starling(Velo Bella) in that order.

Junior Men saw newly crowned District champion Logan Loader get pushed hard by Nick Kintz(Joselyns) and Jeremy Blalock(Joselyns). Kintz was riding his first cross race of the season and showed what a great kid he is to come out and support the local cross racing scene. Kintz is one of the finest highschool Mtn Bike racers and showed why. applying constant pressure to district king Loader. Meanwhile the series leader Blalock struggled over the log bunny hop section and lost contact with the lead pair. It came to a last lap shootout for the win between Loader and Kintz, and 1/4 mile from the finish the on form Loader flew past the mtn bike riding Kintz and sprinted in the rest of the way for a win. Kintz said his 2.1 mtn bike tires didnt help, and I look for Kintz to do more great rides in cyclocross in the future. Santa Cruz and Scotts valley were well represented in the next few riders as Tim Reuss(Bicycle Trip) posted a great ride and took 4th on the day. Meanwhile, Jack Fogelquist(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport) and Taylor Shamshoium(Scotts Valley Cycle Sport) were having a epic battle in their own right. the two racers were locked in a dual of wills and fitness and in the end it was Fogelquist who nipped Shamshoium at the line. These two racers were never sperated by more then a few feet during the event and their epic dual was one of the highlights of the Sunday race. Other top finishers were Dylan MacDonald(Bicyle Trip), Daniel Price, Jonathon Gintz(Cal Giant Inc.), Clayton Gjerstad(Bicycle Trip), and kyle Vanderstoep(Bicycle Trip) in that order.

Junior Women saw Tania Lokmagozian ride like a locomotive, which is a self propelled engine that moves railroad cars, and post a fine win in her division. Lokmagozian really is incredibly good and fast pedaling on her bike, and she has a fine future ahead of her in cycle racing. Another fine rider who really is great on the bike is Meri Meighan, who took home the silver medal. The merry spirited Meighan was racing after a hard fought water polo match the day before. But she mustered up enough energy and drive to show what a great rider she is taking the silver medal. Meighan made sure her dad, famous racer Rob "Buckwheat" Meighan didnt sleep in and miss the race, showing she is smart and responsable as well as a talented cyclist.

Junior 13 & Under division had Noah Karter(Bicycle Trip) post a solid win over a strong group of junior riders. Karter who is the series leader for 2005 showed why he is looking for a college scholarship in the future at many cycling universities. He rode a dominating race and now has a solid grip on the CCCX series for the year. Dean Kimmy showed great racing ability to constantly chase down the crafty Karter, but had to settle for the silver medal in the end. The daring Mendoza brothers, Raymond & Thomas(Bicycle Trip) finished 3rd and 4th on the day. Raymond sits second in the series going into race #4 at Manzanita Park in Prunedale on November 27th. And he hopes to break thru Karter's grip on the series as only three races remain in the series for 2005.

The SingleSpeed division was won by the extremly talented and fit Michael Mathews(Buy-Cell). Mathews racing for the 2nd time that day really had a great ride and beat his team mate Kurt Gensheimer(Buy-Cell) by 2:55. Mathews has been racing two divisions at most cross races this season, and his running background and sporting nature really comes into play when competeing in two races in one day. Mathews is now the Single Speed series leader as Tim Cannard(Buy-Cell) was a no show for this event. Erik Ebberoth and Steve Heaton(Cal Giant Inc.) were neck and neck during most of the event. Heaton fresh off a 24 hour race on the beautiful island of Hawaii was trying as best he could to top the youg and talented Ebberoth. but in the end it was the local racer from Monterey who held off the "Heater" by a small 5 second advantage. Brian McMinn(BT Racing) rode his single speed machine to a fine 5th place on the day. McMinn has been racing the Central Coast Cross and Mtn Bike races for years and had a great ride on this beautiful Sunday in Ft Ord. Rounding out the top 10 were A.J. Ataie(Pegasus Bicycles/Allegiant Air), Kevin Pelley(Scary Fast), Brad Hepler, Andrew May(Pegasus Bicycles/Allegiant Air), and Luke Shennefiels(Roaring Mouse Cycles) in that order.

Mens C division was claimed by the cross crazed rider from Mountain View Andrew Tee(Alpha Sigma Sandbag). Yee Bunny Hopped his way to a great win over a large group of C division racers. Yee charged as hard as possible during the 34 minute race and ended up winning by 19 seconds over Jeremy Keyes(Bay Bikes) and 46 seconds ahead of bronze medalist travis tonn(San Jose Bike Club). Local boy Keyes was nervous before the race as strong riding team mate Jimmy Sopko(Bay Bikes) must have had him psyched out with his confidence and fitness. But Keyes had a slight more bit of technical abilities and riding form on this day and put 45 seconds of bragging rights into his Bay Bikes co-worker. These two riders displayed their new bay bikes racing kits in fine fashion and in the end it was Keyes that can now boast a tad more when they are talking racing for the week at the bike shop. Tao Bernardi(Pegasus Bicycles/Allegiant Air) rounded out the top 5 only 1:11 behind the winner of the day Yee. Brad Hepler was able to hold off Troy Mayfield(Spokesman) by 20 seconds and claim the 6th spot. 8th on the day was Credence Shaw(On The Couch) who ventured off the couch and really had a good ride to make the top 10 places. Alex Anderson(El Gato Rojo) and Charles Meehan(Ride SFO) also finished top 10 on the day respectively. Other finishers were Stephen Ransom, Jeremy Milburn(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC), Ned Mason, Rick Rosales, Mike Levine, Gregory Kuhnen(Ride SFO), Hank Vanderstoep, and John Pasadine, in that order.

Good Luck to all the racers at the UCI races this coming weekend!

District Championships Race Report

From Linda Elgart:

Justin Robinson sprinted ahead of his breakaway mate Andy Jacques-Maynes to take the Elite Men’s championship for Northern California –Nevada. The 2005 Championships were held at Granite Beach outside Sacramento November 11.

On the fast, sandy course, the California Giant riders were quickly away with Simon Vickers (Rock Lobster) and Troy Barry (Alan Factory). They then escaped to cruise to a comfortable two minute lead over Vickers.

In the Elite Women’s event Josie Beggs (Starbucks) overcame a slow start to join a lead group of 4. She escaped Kristin Drumm (Village Peddler), Ann Fitzsimmons (Velo Bella) and Helene Drumm (Village Peddler) with a last lap surge.

In the Masters 35-44 Race, Rich Maile (Art by Opsal) showed his single speed prowess by besting an outstanding field that included all the best NorCal riders. “Rich just velcroed the final corners and got away” commented second place Jesse Scatton (East Sac). Michael Hernandez (Safeway) worked his way through several riders to claim third. Other category Champions were Henry Kramer (Cal Giant) in the 45-54, John Elgart (Webcor Alto Velo) in the 55+, Jeremy Ferguson (Sharp Bicycles) in Juniors 15-16, Logan Louder (Alan) in Juniors 17-18, Coleen Wanty (Missing Link) in Women 35-44, and Joan Gregg (CyclingTraining.com) in Women 45+.

FIAC Winners/Results/Photos

Some people have asked posting a FIAC Race Report. I wasn't there and I'm still waiting for an official report from Dave Gill, because I was so confused about the results I read (i.e. BJM won the race, but AJM won Natz) so I thought I'd have Dave explain. In the meantime, I pasted Sabine's race report below. Anyhow Congrats to Ben and Sarah for their respective victories.

Oh, and results for the FIAC Nationals are up at http://www.cyclocross.cx

Scroll Down for Photos. I'll update this link when I have more photos.

From Sabine Dukes:

Congratulations to Sarah Kerlin and Ben Jacques-Maynes for their
impressive wins at FIAC today.

The women's race was a 4 woman affair until Sarah broke away near the
end of the race for the win. A surging Lauren Constantini was second
and Stella Carey (with gears) was 3rd.

The men's race saw the first time this season that Andy and Ben faced
each other. By the end of the first lap they had already established
a gap on Justin. Ben launched a few attacks and soon was off and
cruised in for a pretty good margin over Andy. Justin won the crowds
though as he never had to get off his bike. Not only did he hop the
running barriers, he also hopped and rode the run ups. The USGP
organizers in the house did take note...

Henry Kramer outlasted a duel with infrequent but strong racer, Bryan
Miller to take the win in the Masters 35+. Early leaders Rich Maile
and Alan Coats succumbed to a rolled tire and a stiff back
respectively. Rich rolled off for a DNF and Alan salvaged a 3rd.

Otherwise it was a pretty low key day. A fun fast, but long course,
and DJ Grant on the speakers led to another pleasant day of cx fun
and friends.

So-Cal: Noble and Wong take Hart Park Cyclocross

The Southern California Cyclocross Cup reached its halfway point in grand fashion as nearly 100 riders took to the European style course of Hart Park in Bakersfield, CA. Sunday Nov. 6th. With the sun shining and a beautiful day in prospect, riders and spectators took to the course for some hot cross’ racing action.

Hosted by the Kern Wheelmen Bicycle Club of Bakersfield, an expo area with food, drink, music and fun greeted everyone. There were demo bikes by Cannondale, Specialized, Redline and wheels by Ritchey. Clif bar, XS energy drink and the famous SCCX booth with a slew of stickers, cowbells, socks further complimented the race.

The course, a design by race director Sam Ames, was based upon time spent in Europe and countless hours watching Belgian and Dutch cross videos, “I always want a wide, flowing course. A course Sven Nys would be proud to ride on. You have to have some technical but still favor the traditional cross rider and I think this venue and course is the one of the best around.” Riders started fast as the course featured pavement, grass and one short but steep run up. Two high concrete curbs were a crowd favorite as a few riders were able to bunny hop them, while most stuck to the traditional dismount.

In the women’s A race series promoter Dorothy Wong of Kelly bikes took the win from rival Carolyn Popovic followed by Amy Bowen in third. “It was a tough race but such a good course. Loose in the corners and that run up! Wow…” said Wong. Popovic and Wong have traded wins this season and have a good battle on their hands.

In the men’s A race it was team Amgen getting the upper hand at the end of the first lap, but not before Nat Faulkner a former Canadian national champion took the first lap prime. “I think I blew myself up a bit, but it was fun!” said Faulkner. With son Chance Noble bunny hopping the tall curbs and teammate Gary Hanson tagging along, national Masters Champion Mark Noble set the pace and the trio quickly built a 30 second gap on Faulkner. In the end Mark pulled away from his teammates to take the win with Chance taking the sprint for second and Hanson in third.

The last bit of business for the day was the drawing to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation. A complete Cannondale cyclocross bike was donated and the lucky winner was Steve Christiansen of Bakersfield. Congratulations!

The series continues next weekend with the Urban Cyclocross at Palos Verdes Estates.
